Mono winds are very strong winds that occur when very high pressure, especially in the middle atmosphere is located east of the Sierra Nevada, and lower pressure is located off the southern California coast. The air rushes down the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, as high as 100 mph at times, strong enough to knock down large trees. The Mono Wind event is expected to last from Thursday evening, through Saturday afternoon, with peak intensity occurring Friday evening. As a result, a High Wind Warning is in effect for the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada and a Wind advisory in effect above 2000 feet in the Foothill areas beginning 7 PM Thursday until 4AM Saturday.
