Hospitality industry feels the pain in latest jobs report

The unemployment rate in the San Luis Obispo County was 7.2 percent in September 2020, down from a  revised 7.6 percent in August 2020, and above the year-ago estimate of 2.5 percent.  This compares with  an unadjusted unemployment rate of 10.8 percent for California and 7.7 percent for the nation during the same period.  

San Luis Obispo County has slowly recovered since the March/April economy shutdown but still has 13,600 fewer jobs in September 2020 than it did a year earlier. Almost half of that have been lost in the hospitality sector where jobs have dropped from 20,100 in September 2019 to 14,600 this September- a decline of 5500. Construction and manufacturing jobs  have dropped by 1300 and 1700 each. Government jobs- mostly teachers have decreased by 2000.
