Port of Los Angeles & Port of Long Beach report lower volume

Screen Shot 2020-02-26 at 6.43.12 AMSAN PEDRO, Calif. The Port of Los Angeles moved 688,999 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in April. While that figure was 53% more than March volumes, it represents a decrease of 6.45% compared to last April, which is the standard comparison. “Retailer orders are soft as consumer purchasing and confidence has dropped precipitously.”said a port spokesman.
At the Port of Long Beach, TEUs were down 17.3% from April 2019.

Rail carloads fall 30%

The Association of American Railroads this week reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending May 16, 2020.Weekly rail traffic was 416,115 carloads and intermodal units, down 22 percent compared with the same week last year.
Total carloads were 184,415 carloads, down 30.2 percent compared with the same week in 2019. Coal shipments fell 44%.

Truck trailer orders way down

In April 019, “trucking companies ordered 15,000 new trailers. This year, they ordered 300 — and the record low is a chilling sign for the consumer economy”, says Business Insider this week.

UPS reports high volume

In their latest first quarter filing United Parcel Service reported that their revenue increased 9.3% and average daily volume was up 8.5%, with growth across all products. Next Day Air average daily volume grew 20.5%, the fourth consecutive quarter of double-digit increases.Commercial deliveries declined while residential deliveries were elevated.
