A few years back consumers demanding better treatment for the hens were blamed on high eggs prices. Now are they to blame for a glut of eggs across the US?

The top US egg producer Cal-Maine Eggs is being weighed down by a 30% decline in prices this quarter. It appears the issue is just too many hens, now 330 million and 800,000 more than a year ago USDA says.  Prices are well below a three year average this fall as your omelette will be a bargain this holiday even if you have to pay more to get to grandma’s house. You may get those next dozen eggs for a dollar at your local supermarket.

Large buyers of eggs like McDonald’s and WalMart, Cal-Maine’s largest customers,  are demanding cage-free eggs by 2025.

What’s in the Water? Tires

A study of Bay Area stormwater found microparticles of plastics. The study said that “nearly half of the particles were black fragments that had a distinctive rubbery texture” when handled with tweezers. Spectroscopic analysis and secondary characteristics suggested these particles may be synthetic or natural rubber. The literature suggests that one potential source of these particles is vehicle tire wear.
