He actually developed what was to become the Costco shopping center on south Mooney in the 1990s. Now Dave Paynter has re-purchased the center, today anchored by Walmart, the fourth big retail center on the strip owned by his company. The list also includes Sequoia Mall, the Dicks Sporting Goods center and the Kohl’s /Ross property.
”Like the other centers we see an opportunity to upgrade and re- tenant the property” says Paynter.
The purchase does not include Walmart but includes Burlington and Ashley Furniture and the former Circuit City building along with the inline shops in the complex. ”We have tenant coming into the long- vacant Circuit City space but the deal is not signed yet” he says. Paynter has used the opportunity to relocate Rent A Center from across the street to next to El Pollo Loco. The move allows more space for the new DSW shoe store. Coming to the Dicks Sporting Goods center is the popular Home Goods store, under construction, that city sources expect to open next month.
Regards Sequoia Mall Paynter says he is ”making progress “on a plan to re-tenant the center but that he is not ready to discuss it.
Excited about the purchase is Visalia vice mayor Warren Gubler who notes that Paytner now controls three corners at Mooney and Caldwell, the city’s busiest intersection. With a long history of working with the city Gubler says “if anybody can upgrade that center it should be Dave Paynter.”
