Historic Cayucos pier,closed since July 2013 will get rebuilt starting next month replacing piers from the tidal zone to the end of the pier. Work should be completed by May.The pier was stabilized last December from large storm surges while funding was being gathered to fix the pier permanently. First built in 1872 to load and unload lumber butter and milk the pier was no longer used for shipping after 1920.
Today with money in hand the state-owned pier will get a new lease on life using funds overseen by the state Fish and Wildlife agency. Popular today both for tourism and fishing,the money to start the repairs next month includes $500,000 in volunteer donations raised locally for both repair and ongoing maintenance
With a total cost of costs of $3.5 million the the Cayucos Pier Project Committee says the county will pay $1,790,000; Save Cayucos Pier Project: $100,000 for structural rebuild and $135,000 for new power and electrical work,Chevron Corp.: $5,000, California Coastal Conservancy: $750,000, and California Wildlife Conservation Fund: $750,000.
This week the SLO Board of Supervisors are expected to approve the low bid of $1.7 million for the work to be done by Associated Pacific Constructors, Inc.
