SLO Jobless Rate Falls To 5.7%

Three Thousand Fewer  Jobless

The unemployment rate in the San Luis Obispo County was 5.7 percent in May 2013, down from a revised 6.0 percent in April 2013, and below the year-ago estimate of 7.9 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 8.1 percent for California and 7.3 percent for the nation during the same period.

At 5.7% rate the number of unemployed  has dropped from 11,300 residents in May 2012 to 8300 this May – a 26.5% drop with 3000 people off the rolls. A closer look shows some 4400 more people employed  year to year  – all in in non farm jobs while the number of farm jobs has held the same at 5000.

SLO County’s May jobless rate has not been this low since 2008 when it was 5.1%.

Across California  the state’s unemployment rate decreased to 8.6 percent in May, and nonfarm payroll jobs increased by 10,800 during the month for a total gain of 767,200 jobs since the recovery began in February 2010, according to data released today by the California Employment Development Department (EDD) from two separate surveys.
