Announced  this month 8minute Solar Energy has inked a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Clean Power Alliance (CPA) for the output of a 300-MW solar project in California that will be coupled with energy storage.

The off-take contract will support the construction of the 400-MW direct current (DC) Rexford 1 Solar & Storage Center, which will include a 180-MW/540-MWh battery energy storage system.

The developer will start building the solar park on private, low-productivity disturbed farmland in Tulare County in early 2022 creating more than 400 union construction jobs and about 1,000 indirect jobs.

The solar plant is expected to be completed in 2023. It will contribute more than USD 200 million to the local economy over its life, the developer estimates.

“The recent blackouts and continued wildfires in California offer sobering proof of the urgent need for more renewable and reliable energy generation that both fortifies our grid and fights climate change – and large-scale solar paired with energy storage is the most efficient, lowest-cost way to achieve just that,” commented Tom Buttgenbach, founder and CEO of 8minute.

The company said it has now contracted 4.5 GW of solar projects. The company has more than 18 GW of solar capacity and 24 GWh of storage under development across California, Texas and the southwestern part of the country.
