Visalia permits higher as valuation doubles

Visalia’s new home permits are up 31% so far this year says the city. With numbers through July 2019 the total valuation of all type of permits nearly doubled compared to the same period in 2018. Leading the increase were commercial permits that went  to $52 million compared to $21 million in 2018 during the 7 month period. That in turn was largely due to the huge UPS shell building permit issued in recent weeks.Still, almost every category of building is up this year.

Public Safety building at Civic Center could get green light

A city staff report set to be heard at the first meeting in August suggests council could decide to move forward on design of a new public safety building at the city Civic Center property. The land located near Oak and Burke has been set aside for more city offices including a new City Hall. But this council appears to leaning away from moving forward on a City Hall and instead prioritizing a new Public Safety Facility.

If the council decides to take the next step they might expect to spend several million dollars on a consultant study do design work says staff.

City of Visalia weighs property sales

The City of Visalia is negotiating  to sell several surplus properties  in town.They include the former  Fort Visalia block, more recently a lumber yard on Oak and Garden. The apparent use for the property could be  by for a multi-story housing complex  to be operated by either Self Help Enterprises or the Tulare County  Housing Authority.

Also on the closed door agenda the week the possible sale of 17 acres owed by the city North of State Highway 198, South of Hillsdale Avenue and East of Shirk Avenue being bid on by San Joaquin Valley Homes for a possible new home subdivision.  

New crepe place on Walnut

A new Crepe restaurant will open at 5141 W. Walnut Ave according to tenant improvement  permit issued by the city.

Downton Tachibana Japanese eatery relocating

Tachibana Japanese restaurant has closed their doors at 120 Main this week but plans to relocate  somewhere in the Downton area they say.

Corby’s subs in old Bothof’s space

Vacant for a number of years the former Bothof’s Bakery space at 221 Main Street in Visalia will soon be remodeled for a bar and grill called Corby’s Rock & Roll Heroes. Owner Brandon Morse writes on his  Facebook “Bringing back the subs from Fat Boys days along with some flairs with appetizers, beer, and wine for your evening enjoyment. Stay tuned for the rebirth of 80s rock! We can’t wait to open on Main St in Visalia!”
