Heavy rainfall in 2018-19 has resulted in the best salmon fishing season in decades along the California coast when the three-month season opened in May 2019. Some 400,000 Chinook salmon are expected to return to the Sacramento River in 2019, still down from the 1.5 million salmon returning in 2003.This year’s big supply has pushed price per pound down for a change.
Back in February the officials forecast was for 379,632 adult Sacramento Valley salmon now in the ocean off the West Coast, compared to 229,400 a year ago at this time. This suggested a return to relatively plentiful salmon fishing in 2019 would be likely.
None other than the Wall Street Journal recently featured Giovanni’s Fish Market in Morro Bay talking about the ample supply of salmon this sumner.
