Winning by 57% this week – 2 percent more than needed, Measure A, a property tax bond issue required 55% of the voters to approve the $105 million issuance.
Visalia Unified School District says Measure A will include upgrades to campuses across the District and make possible a new high school so that enrollments and opportunities are balanced. The tax will apply only to property owners. The estimated cost is $36 per year per $100,000 of assessed value (not market value).
VUSD says they need this bond measure to:
◦Replace leaking roofs
◦Provide modern science labs and technology
◦Prevent overcrowding
◦Increase safety/security at all schools
◦Provide equal access for students
◦Improve access for children with disabilities
In addition VUSD says the State of California will provide matching funds. Visalians’ local investment of $105 million can then be turned into approximately $225 million to invest into quality schools.
None of the funds can be used for salaries. VUSD’s AA- rating means lower interest rates.
What schools will benefit?
Every school will benefit from Measure A. While VUSD has consistently invested wisely in our campuses, 80% are over 20 years old – 60% are over 50 years old. That’s a lot of air conditioners, heaters, roofs, windows, computers and athletic facilities to upgrade.
Continued population growth will require that VUSD build a high school in the next few years. In response to community feedback, and if supported by the community via Measure A, the new school will include a pool, theater, stadium and gymnasium.
