July 3,2015-
The City of Morro Bay is inviting the community to celebrate the official opening of the Morro Creek Bridge during a ribbon cutting at noon July 4.
The long-awaited project provides a northward extension to the popular, award-winning Morro Bay Harborwalk and non-motorized crossing over Morro Creek to North Morro Bay and Morro Bay High School.
July 4 festivities will take place at the north side of the newly completed bridge. The conclusion of the ribbon cutting ceremony will initiate the beginning of the Morro Bay 4th of July Bike Parade to Tidelands Park. Festivities for the whole family will continue at Tidelands Park until 5 p.m. For more information on the July 4 Family Funday, click the link below.
The Harborwalk provides pedestrians and cyclists scenic views of the bay while providing a link to Morro Rock from the Waterfront commercial district. The Bridge and Multi-Use Trail will extend the Harborwalk with a pedestrian boardwalk and separated Class I bike path along the dirt portion of the Embarcadero to Atascadero Road. The bridge is a pre-fabricated steel structure, sufficiently wide and strong enough to provide essential access for emergency vehicles. The bridge will closed to non-emergency motorized vehicles. Additional amenities provided with this project include viewing areas, stone seat walls, and bicycle and surrey parking on the south side of the creek.
The project was made possible by a collaboration of funding efforts including grants from the National Scenic Byways Program, Federal Highway Transportation Enhancement Funds, the SLOCOG Regional Transportation Improvement Program, as well as City of Morro Bay local funds. Project design and permitting was performed by a consultant team led by RRM design of San Luis Obispo. Construction was done by CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria. RICK Engineering of San Luis Obispo supports City staff in performing construction management. Total project construction costs were approximately $1.8 million.
