South Valley Unemployment Rates Fall

The unemployment rate in the Tulare County was 15.7 percent in March 2013, down from a revised 15.9 percent in February 2013, and below the year-ago estimate of 17.7 percent.The county  added 2500 non farm jobs in the past year  but lost 200 farm jobs. The biggest jump came in manufacturing – up 1100 jobs.

The unemployment rate in the Kings County was 15.4 percent in March 2013, down from a revised 15.6 percent in February 2013, and below the year-ago estimate of 17.2 percent.

The unemployment rate in the Fresno County was 14.9 percent in March 2013, down from a revised 15.3 percent in February 2013, and below the year-ago estimate of 17.0 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 9.4 percent for California and 7.6 percent for the nation during the same period.

In Fresno between February 2013 and March 2013, total wage and salary employment increased by 2,800 jobs (up 0.9 percent) to total 322,400. Nonfarm employment rose by 4,000 jobs (up 1.4 percent), while farm employment declined by 1,200 jobs (down 3.2 percent).
•    Government posted the largest month-over gain with the addition of 1,700 jobs to reach 66,600. Federal government (up 1,300 jobs), accounted for 76 percent of the job gain in this sector. State government and local government each grew by 200 jobs.
•    Professional and business services expanded by 700 jobs and leisure and hospitality added 400 jobs.
•    Major industries that edged up by 300 jobs each included: construction and educational and health services.

In Kern County the unemployment rate was 13.6 percent in March 2013, unchanged from a revised 13.6 percent in February 2013, and below the year-ago estimate of 15.3 percent.
