Making good on its promise to expand availability of organic chicken, Livingston-based Foster Farms has taken out a $15.8 million building permit to erect a new organic feed mill next to its conventional feed mill in Traver.Construction of the new organic feed mill will begin around March 14. Foster Farms Organic chicken is processed at the company’s Cherry facility in Fresno.
The company is now the West’s largest producer of organic chicken as consumer demand for antibiotic-free meat grows. In recent years the poultry producer has been stung by a recall due to salmonella and criticism of its use of antibiotics to raise poultry.
Construction of the new mill highlights the need to separate both feed and chickens themselves using organic principles from storage of conventional feed and chicken ranches where pesticides and fertilizers are used in the growing process.
Building a new mill in the south Valley means the big poultry company will be expanding its organic chicken ranches nearby. Foster Farms raises organic chicken in Merced currently.
Tulare County officials say the new mill will create 15 jobs on site.
The project is just one of 9 highlighted by Tulare County’s economic development department at a recent BOS meeting (see chart).
