Valley /Sierra Temps Ready To Pop

Valley and High Sierra temps are heading higher as the calendar moves into May. Temps are expected to hover near 90 degrees in Bakersfield starting April 30 and continuing – meaning the Spring snowmelt will pick up steam. Fresno too will reach 88 degrees toward then of next week. In the Sierra Giant Forest at 6500 feet is expected to reach 62 degrees May 7. Collins Floats Council Chamber Idea

Screen Shot 2017-04-25 at 11.50.45 AMMomentum appears to be building behind the sale by Tulare County of the art deco courthouse annex on Court St In Visalia. The discussion showed up on the City of Visalia closed door agenda last week. The long vacant 4-story building, built in the 1930s, would make a great place for the Visalia City Council to hold meetings says council member Greg Collins who floated the idea to other members. “There is a classic marble room on one floor that would make a fine council chamber” he adds. Collins and county Supervisor Amy Shuklian have been pushing the idea to renovate and re-use the classic Downtown building.

KD Negotiating For Lindsay Clinic Site

Kaweah Delta Healthcare is negotiating to lease or purchase the former Tulare hospital clinic site in Lindsay that closed last December.
The building, owned by Lindsay District Hospital, is at 845 Sequoia. Kaweah Delta already has a clinic in town but is believed to be looking at this as a second specialty site nearby. Tulare opened their satellite clinic in Lindsay in 2015 but tough finances cased the closure recently.

Proteus Expected To Leave Wittman Center

Visalia Mayor Warren Gubler says the City has been informed that Proteus will end the lease for the Wittman Center in June.”We hope some third party or nonprofit will run the youth center ” says Gubler. In service for over a decade the drop-in center in the city’s Northside serves 80 to150 youths a day. The City and others fund the program at the center.

Tulare Jobless Down Year Over Year

Tulare County’s jobless rate was up in March 2017 from the month before but year-over-year unemployment fell. The rate in March 2017 was 12.3%, up from 12% in February, but below the 12.7 % level seen in March 2016. The number of jobs is up 2300 from last year including a surprising increase of 300 farm jobs. The county’s labor force declined by 800 over a year’s time as fewer people are looking for work.

Downtown Tulare To Get Starbucks

Screen Shot 2017-04-27 at 7.44.02 AMDowntown Tulare will get a new Starbucks to be built at the corner of Cross and J Street with the big coffee company buying 1900 sq ft at the the former Arco site. Starbucks bought the property from the Orosco Group who had acquired it from the city Redevelopment agency years ago. Starbucks is expected to build one of its drive-thrus here, the town’s third Starbucks location.

Self Help Plans Rental Complexes In Downton Visalia / Lindsay

Self Help Enterprises is hoping to build several new rental projects in the area ,dependent on funding. For the first time the nonprofit would build in the Downtown Visalia on a block of surplus city land- the former Fort Visalia site.
Lofts at Fort Visalia:  Self-Help Enterprises has prepared a concept for a new rental project in downtown Visalia for a site located at the northwest corner of Bridge and Oak. SHE anticipates submitting a concept proposal in response to the Request for Proposals when issued by the City for the development of the site.
Palm Terrace: The final financing application for the Palm Terrace apartment rental community in Lindsay has been submitted. This development is 50-units of rental housing and includes a $1.1 million roundabout at the intersection of Westwood and Hermosa.  The project is being funded with State Multifamily Housing Program (MHP) and AHSC funding in partnership with California Vanpool Authority and the City of Lindsay.  The project should start construction in August 2017.

Cutler Orosi Could Get Sports Complex

County and school officials are applying for $3.5 million to help fund a new sports complex in CutlerOrosi. They already have some $2 million in bond funds designated for the project that would feature soccer fields, basketball courts and a playground. The town has just one small park for 18,000 residents says a county report.

Tulare To Get Truck Wash On Paige

The Parcel Map Committee for the City of Tulare will hear an application from the property owner to carve out a parcel to be sold to Express Truck Wash and Lube, a new company to Tulare. They will take up the plan Monday, May 8, 2017 beginning at 10:30 a.m.The project is west of Hwy 99 on Paige Ave next to the planned Pilot Truck Stop and near Loves. The land is now owned by Cornelius Vander Eyk.
