Visalia Feed Company Rushes To Help Texas Animals

September 10,2017-

Visalia-based Western Milling is rushing animal feed and pet food to help the thousands of displaced and hungry animals impacted by Hurricane Harvey across south Texas.

This weekend four semi truck loads headed out of Goshen on their way to the Houston area including one truckload of pet food made at the Visalia Perfection Pet Food factory that is part of Western Milling.

VP,Human Resources for Western Milling, Aubrey Michael tells how the effort came tougher.

“Last Saturday, our Vice President of Sales and Head Nutritionist, Bob Berczynski reached out to the fellow members of our Leadership Team and we discussed how we could help. We were all moved by the animal rescue footage we saw on the news, and, being in the feed and pet food business, we felt this was the natural way for us to jump in.

By Monday we were in touch with the Texas Farm Bureau, who is working with Texas A&M to coordinate delivery of supplies and feed to farmers and producers in need. They let us know of the need for all stock feed for cattle and horses, as they still had hundreds of animals stranded due to flooding, and a number of producers and farmers in the Beaumont area were short on feed.”

As for pets, estimates are that thousands of dogs and cats have been displaced by Harvey and organizations from all over have rushed in to help.

In this case HEB, a large Texas grocery chain for whom Perfection Pet Food manufactures dog food has been active in coordinating and providing disaster relief. “They let us know of the need for dog and cat food at NRG Stadium” in Houston.

So Perfection Pet Foods lined up a donation of 25 tons of dog and cat food. By Thursday of last week this donation headed out to Houston arriving this weekend, driven by Western Milling driver Pablo Gonzalez, whose truck is pictured.

The Visalia company is also coordinating money donations to the Texas Farm Bureau as employees at Western Milling have stepped up to donate to the Texas Ag Education Disaster Relief Fund that helps FFA youth with their animals.

Aubrey says ”All in all, we’re donating about $25,000 in food and supplies, and while it may not be huge in the big scheme of things, one of our core values is “Care For Each Other.” We don’t always get it right, but we feel like we at Western Milling are a family, part of the larger family of ag producers, farmers, and pet owners. Our employees are incredibly giving and we feel grateful to have a team of good, generous people who call Western Milling their work home.”

Even as the donation trucks head back from Texas, Hurricane Irma promises to do the same to livestock and pets in Florida this week.
