Valley Agricultural Leader Speaks out on DACA

Screen Shot 2014-11-17 at 2.40.24 PMFresno, CA — On September 5, 2017, Manuel Cunha, Jr., President of Nisei Farmers League announced that he was deeply disappointed in the termination of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

The President’s decision to end this program will affect 800,000 young people, which includes 225,000 Californians. These young people have only known the United States as their home. They have attended our local colleges, U C Merced, California State University Fresno, Community Colleges which includes Fresno City College in pursuit of improving our communities.

The parents of the Central Valley DACA recipients, who are mostly agricultural workers have relied on the promise of our elected officials that their children would be protected. They would be able to achieve the American Dream, which their parents sought for them when they brought them here.

There have been multiple pieces of legislation introduced by Congressional Members, all of which are inadequate in their current state. They leave out many individuals who are current DACA recipients.

I implore our elected officials and local leaders to work quickly and together, so the hard work of the DACA recipients is not in vain.
