Coastal Crop Updates: Avocados / Strawberries

Big year for Mexican Avocados

That guacamole you ate all year was mostly made from Mexican grown avocados. In 2017 California supplied just 10 percent of the total volume we consumed in the US according to the California Avocado Commission. Here are the numbers.(click to enlarge)

California avocado production varies between 200 million lbs to 500 million pounds, a fraction of the Mexican crop size.

In recent years Mexico has been supplying the US with about 80% of the volume. The state of Michoacán is the world leader in avocado production and accounts for 80 percent of total Mexican avocado production.

 

California Strawberries Up About 6 Percent

The California strawberry crop is up for 2017 around 6%. The  Santa Maria area volume is up even higher.Here are the industry stats.(click to enlarge)
