Tulare County Plans To Buy Visalia Cigna Building

Screen Shot 2014-01-10 at 11.03.23 AMTulare County Board Of Supervisors held a public hearing August 25 to hear testimony on the county’s plan to purchase the Cigna building at 5300 W Tulare Ave in Visalia for $16.97 million. The building is 180,679 sf,about half vacant.That portion will be used by multiple county departments says Jean Rousseau, county administrator.
The remainder will be leased to Cigna Healthcare, IRS and Pearson Realty bringing in $1.5 million a year says Rousseau.
Yet to be finalized is whether Cigna will stay in the office now that they plan to merge with Anthem Blue Cross. Cigna employs 700 in Visalia.
Rousseau says the lease with Cigna expires in June 2016, only months away. But he adds that discussions withe company are positive and that Cigna is “eager to extend the lease another 10 years.”
That sound like good news for those 700 workers, for Visalia’s economy and for the new landlord too.
Rousseau says the county is leaning toward relocation of the sheriffs dispatch as well as fire dispatch to the building once it becomes available around the end of this year. Another possible move could take HHS from Government Plaza on Mooney (another former insurance company owned office) to the new county space. In terms of all the moving departments Rousseau says “we got a lot going on.” He adds the county is happy to say they are buying the added space “for cash” adding they are now “debt free.”
