Tulare In New Battle With Matheny Tract, Over Plans For Sewer

The City of Tulare is refusing to cooperate with a County plan to use grant funds to do a design for a sewer that would be hooked up to Tulare sewer system.The City has rejected pleas from attorneys for Matheny Tract that they abide by what they was an agreement in place based on an annexation of land near the tract. The agreement was overseen by LAFCO. The dustup is reminiscent of the years of battle over extension of city water to the same low income community – only ending after the state stepped in to force Tulare to allow it and after Matheny Tract lawyers sued in court. Sources say the County is about to lose grant funding for the design work because the City refuses to issue a “will serve” letter.
Now Matheny Tract attorneys may have to head back to court to get this to happen. Sources say City Manager Don Dorman,who steps down September 3, has been a key player in the face off.

Weatherby’s Closing Confirmed

Weatherby’s Furniture has announced in adverting that it will close its landmark Visalia store after the building was sold. A sale has begun that will end when the Walnut and Mooney store closes at the end of October. A development group led by The Orosco Group confirmed it bought the building but denied that any plans were finalized as to what happens next. Now it is clear the tenant is leaving.

Visalia Council To Vote Sept 6 on East Main Tap Room Rule

The Visalia City Council is expected to vote in the affirmative September 6 to allow tap rooms to open along East Main and nearby without a conditional use permit. The Planning Commission recently approved the change. Planner Josh McDonnell says he expects several new applications for brewpubs and or wine bars to be filed soon as result.”We could see one open before the end of the year” he predicts. The pubs would not need to sell food to qualify.

The historic Palace Hotel at Main and Court is getting a makeover over the next month with a new paint job, awnings and new windows says owner Danny Freitas. A new Mediterranean restaurant is opening next month where the Brazilian eatery was. Freitas still has hopes to remodel the upstairs in the 130 year-old building, but not yet. He bought the building last year.

Dinuba Odwalla Plant In Escrow

Hopes are stirring in Dinuba that some of those lost jobs will come after Coke closed their Odwalla Juice plant some months back. The broker handling the sale says it is in escrow. Odwalla relocated to southern California but left the smoothy plant equipped to make juice, in place.Interest has been strong from food companies looking for sites here says Tulare County EDC President Paul Saldana.

Gas Prices Head Lower

The lowest price for gas this week is at Costco at $2.27 a gallon. Statewide the average price for gas is down about 25 cents in the past month says Gas Buddy. Looks like lower prices at the pump coming your way based on a decrease in wholesale gasoline prices in the past week.

Tulare’s Sunmet Juice Company Installs Solar

The juice maker has taken out a permit for JKB Energy to install over $1 million worth of solar arrays to help power their plant.
