Around Tulare County: Farmersville Pot Vote / New Mooney Shopping Center/ Brew Pub Opens

Farmersville Plans Pot Vote

Add Farmersville to the list of towns exploring allowing the pot industry to grow there. Commercial cannabis cultivation and a tax on that business will be the subject of a July 17 public hearing as well as a July 26 hearing, both at 6 PM in Farmersville.

A staff report suggests the city could get some $3 million a year in annual revenue from a license fee and tax on indoor cultivation. The plan is to place an initiative on the November 7 general election ballot. Dispensaries would not be allowed.

Already Woodlake in Tulare  County as well as Hanford and Corcoran in Kings County and Coalinga and Mendota in Fresno County are looking at the idea.

New Shopping Center On South Mooney Takes Shape

Developer Harvey May has submitted preliminary plans for new 28 acre, mixed-use shopping center at the southwest corner of Mooney Blvd and Visalia Parkway – across the Parkway from Target.

The center would include 3 larger spaces at 30,000sf, 25,000 and 14,750 as well as smaller shop and drive-thru spaces. Retail square foot based on the current site plan is around 86,000sf with other Mooney frontage that could be added later.

“We have great interest by tenants here including 5 letters of intent” says May. “We are negotiating with a speciality grocer” he adds. The development is not all retail including land near the mobil home park, south and west of the project, where tentative plans call for residential and office uses.

Barrelhouse Brewing Opens In Visalia

Visalia Mall Welcomes New Store

Visalia Mall has leased the former Village East space #1400 that is  approximately 3,400 sf to charlotte russe who sell women’s, juniors’, misses’ and plus size apparel and accessories.  The new store is expected to open September 1 or sooner.  Check out their website at and their  Facebook page at

In other Visalia Mall news, beauty supplier Sephora is expanding in the JC Pennys store and Gymboree has announced that despite the company’s restructuring, it will not close their locations in Visalia or at the Tulare Outlet.

Bridge Would Link Main St Building To Parking Garage

Downtown property owner and restauranteur Jonathon Van Ryn and partner Mario Cellilo are considering construction of a pedestrian bridge over the alley connecting their Main Street building to the city parking garage to the south, near Kaweah Delta. Assistant to Van Ryn, Kendel Rodriguez calls the idea a “sky bridge.”The bridge would connect 213, 215 and 217 W Main in Visalia to the multi-story garage potentially allowing conversion of the second stories of the building to residential or other uses The building has 2 stories and a basement. If there was a conversion to an office, a user could park and walk to work or even “live-work”. So far, the city likes the idea.

Visalia RV Parts Firm – Coast Distribution – To Close

Located at 2305 N Plaza D in Visalia, Coast Distribution who leases the 230,000sf warehouse there, plans to close by year’s end after the company was sold to LKQ who has locations in Fresno and Bakersfield. The Visalia building in the Mid-State 99 complex, the largest existing vacant space in Visalia, is for lease, says realtor Nick Audino.

Woodlake Businessman Funds Pot Study

In Woodlake, a property owner is funding a consultant-led city study to look into commercial cultivation of cannabis. Woodlake is considering putting a cannabis tax measure on the November 2017 ballot. Bruce Kopitar who owns US Tower in Woodlake that includes vacant industrial land, is backing the $30,000 study under the name Woodlake Holdings LLC. Kopitar is listed as the agent for the LLC. 

Goshen To Get Dollar General

The Tulare County Board of Supervisors approved a change of zone for 5 acres of ag land at the intersection of Betty Drive and Robinson Ave in Goshen to allow construction of new Dollar General store there. Cal Trans is reconstructing the Betty Drive interchange off Hwy 99 nearby.
