Tuesday Morning Coming To Visalia

Retailer Tuesday Morning will open a store in Packwood Creek on Mooney Blvd ay 4144 S Mooney, on the east side of the street. They will build a 12,000sf store there.Tuesday Morning describes itself as an upscale, deep discount, off-price retailer specializing in domestic and international, designer and name-brand closeout merchandise. They have over 750 stores nationwide.

Car Wash Near Visalia Costco

In Visalia Surf-Thru Car Wash is adding a new 4700sf car wash near the Costco to be completed in about 8 months. The company has locations in Tulare  and in Visalia at Tulare and Mooney.

Tulare Selects City Attorney

The City of Tulare has selected a firm to be their permanent city attorney according to Mayor Carlton Jones. Sacramento-based Goyette Associates will represent the city with attorneys Heather Phillips and Sarah Tobias based in Tulare. The city is also interviewing candidates for city manager. Jones said finalizing these positions is important to decrease “uncertainty”about the future of the community.

Jobless Rate Falls Below Double Digits

Tulare County’s jobless rate in April fell to 9.9%  – below double digits for the first time for any month of May since 2008.It was 10.8% a year earlier and 12.3% in March 2017.  Non-farm jobs are up a strong 2300 year-over-year,led by healthcare jobs.

Citizens Bank To Close One Branch In Tulare

Citizens Business Bank has made  an application with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to consolidate a branch located at 256 North K Street, Tulare, into a branch located at 1901 E. Prosperity Avenue, Tulare,  what was the Valley Business Bank location. The branch to be consolidated will operate under the name of Citizens Business Bank. The closure is a result of a merger with Valley Business Bank.

Electric Bus Maker To Break Ground

Porterville’s Green Power Buses says they will have a formal ground breaking for their new manufacturing plant June 2. The 150,000sf plant replaces a facility in Chico the company uses now. Green Power is building an assembly building for their electric buses – a temporary facility in Porterville ready to use this summer until the manufacturing plant is ready in about a year. Porterville is hoping a Chinese-based battery manufacturer who makes components for the electric buses will also decide to make their batteries in Porterville – adding more jobs.

Trump Budget Makes Ag Cuts

President Trump’s new budget would cut or eliminate farm safety net, nutrition, research and trade programs, an unpopular move for farm groups who backed him in the election. Already citrus growers are peeved at his decision to allow import of Argentine lemons after pleas not to do so. The budget proposal offers a $228 billion reduction in federal farm and nutrition spending over 10 years. The American Farm Bureau Federation expressed concern about the proposal, and said it will ask Congress to maintain programs that are vital to farmers and rural communities.

FHCN Buys Portervile Property For New Clinic

Family Healthcare Network has purchased the former Smith Market in Porterville,a 31,334sf aquisition. CEO Kerry Hydash says the plan is to revamp the space into a large clinic to be open in early 2018. The clinic will have a full pharmacy as well as optical services. It will be the second FHCN clinic in town.FHCN is also planning a new clinic in Strathmore.

Earlimart Will Get Grocery Store

The farmworker town of Earlimart will get its first full-service grocery store in coming months with news that Fiesta Supermarkets will build a 12,000sf store at the White River Plaza at Ave 56 and Hwy 99. They have a store in Wasco. The store will feature a meat counter and bakery as well as fresh produce,all not available in town today.

New Cold Storage

Sundale Vineyard near Tulare is building a new 42,000sf cold storage plant valued at $4.5 million.

Gas Prices Up

Gas prices are up around 12 cents since May 1 in California. Gas Buddy is expecting stable prices this summer giving a boost to summer car travel. A survey finds more than 82 percent said they will take a road trip this summer, a 7-percent increase from last year and a 9-percent increase compared to 2015, with 70 percent planning to take at least two trips.

Almond Acres Climb

California’s almond acreage in 2016 climbed 7%, led by Kern County.

County Population Higher

Tulare County’s population increased 1.1% in 2016 according to estimates from the state Department of Finance. Tulare grew fastest at 1.96% followed by Visalia at 1.66%, up over 2000 residents.
