Around Visalia: Nordstrom Update / VECC Bids / More

Visalia Matches Fresno Offer For Nordstrom

Screen Shot 2015-12-23 at 7.07.25 AMOn a 5 to 0 vote the Visalia City Council Monday offered to match incentives approved by Fresno a few days earlier in a bid to attract 2 Nordstrom distribution centers and a possible 1875 jobs.”I think we have an excellent chance” says Mayor Steve Nelsen. He says the decision “had overwhelming support not only from Visalians but from surrounding communities who will all benefit from the jobs.”
So now what? “I just hope we don’t get into some kind of bidding war – race to the bottom with Fresno” he says. Visalia is “awaiting a decision “promised by Nordstrom after the first of the year. Nelsen says he understands Visalia and Fresno are also competing with some Nevada city for the huge project.

Ground Breaking For Visalia Emergency Communications Center Postponed

Ground breaking for the new Visalia Emergency Communications Center (VECC) will be postponed from this month into the New Year says Mayor Steve Nelsen. This, after several of the contractors in the December 8 competitive bidding, two with lowest bids, dropped out. ”We’re down to third lowest bidder now” says Nelsen, still not far from the $11 million engineer’s estimate. Nelsen says although the city has a 5% leeway to award city bids to local contractors – in this case because the project involves state and federal monies – they have to go with lowest bid. The council will take the bids at a January meeting. The VECC project will be completed in July 2017 if work progresses as hoped. The building is the first city-owned complex in the new East Visalia civic campus and is located east of Burke Street and north of the proposed School Avenue extension, along Jennings Ditch.
