Tulare County Crops Valued At $6.2 Billion In 2012

Tulare County agriculture continued to fill the worlds dinner plates in 2012 with the annual crop value placed at $6.2 billion compared to $5.6 billion in 2011. The value of the county’s crop is right behind number one Fresno County who reported $6.6 billion in 2012 – down from $6.8 billion in 2011.

Grape led the way in 2012 in Fresno County valued at $1.1 billion and in Tulare County grapes were number two after milk – jumping  from $529 million in 2011 to $863 million in 2012 on nearly 5000 fewer acres! The biggest increase came in raisins where the crop value went from $1250 a ton in 2011 to $1900 a ton in 2012.

The biggest crop category in Tulare County was milk, as usual, at $1.8 billion down 12% from the year before.Meanwhile fruit and nuts enjoyed a 29%increase in value.

In the citrus category ( number three crop) acreage reached 118 thousand acres in 2012 with tangerine acreage about the same as Valencia acreage – around  17,000 acres. The value of the Valence crop in Tulare County in 2012 was $96 million compared to $140 million for the same acreage in tangerines.

Enjoying significant  bounces were the values of the pistachio crop,peaches,oranges,walnuts,almonds and olives.Timber sales were higher.

Tulare County grows 120 different commodities with 43 of those with a value of over $1 million. The crops are exported to 84 countries.
